Brewing your own coffee can give you the freedom to experiment with different flavors and techniques to find the perfect cup tailored to your individual tastes. It can also be a great way to relax and enjoy a soothing morning ritual. Brewing coffee at home can be surprisingly simple, and we have put together five simple tips to help beginners learn the basics of what makes a GREAT cup of coffee. You'll also find we have made a few suggestions of basic supplies we love that can help you level up your coffee game! Pairing some simple supplies with the right knowledge and you can enjoy every cup more than the last!

  1. Start with good quality beans – Make sure to use freshly roasted, high-quality beans for the best cup of coffee. Sounds a lot like Novalee coffee to us...😉!
  2. Use the right grind – Coarse grinds work better for French presses, medium grinds for drip coffee makers, and finer grinds for espresso machines. If you are interested in trying the whole bean coffee route a coffee grinder will be needed. Our favorite, bang for your buck and not cheaply beginner coffee grinder is the Cuisinart DBM-8 Supreme Grind Automatic Burr Mill.
  3. Use the right amount of coffee – Use two tablespoons of ground coffee for every six ounces of water is a typical ratio. However, if you'd like to be a bit more precise we find that using 1 gram of ground coffee to 15 grams of water is OUR perfect ratio.
  4. Use the correct water temperature – The ideal temperature for brewing coffee is between 195 and 205 degrees Fahrenheit. If you are going to be using a French Press or any other kind of pour over method coffee we really love our Cosori Electric Kettle. We use it for all of our pour over coffees as well as our tea (ya know, we have to switch it up from time to time too).
  5. Store your beans properly – Store your beans in an airtight container and away from heat, light, and moisture. We love the Fellow Atmos Vacuum Coffee Canister for its' modern, sleek look but obviously also for it's ability to keep our top notch Novalee Coffee beans fresher longer!
